A warming rice dish, traditionally cooked in layers of basmati rice and marinated chicken in classic Biryani spices. I’ve taken influence from both sides of the family for this one, but what they agree on is having some cooling raita alongside for a different temperature and texture to help balance out the dish.

Cook our delicious Bombay Biryani in just Minutes

We’ve sourced and blended all of the unique flavour ingredients to make our authentic Bombay Biryani. We bring these all together in a recipe kit, which consists of 3 flavour pots; a Garlic Paste pot, a Biryani Paste pot and a Bombay Spice Mix pot. Simply follow our recipe, adding a few items from your fridge, to cook this delicious Bombay Biryani in just 30 minutes.

How Our Recipes Kits Work

We provide flavour ingredients:

  • Garlic Paste
  • Biryani Paste
  • Bombay Spice Mix

Your shopping list:

Basmati rice
large onion
boneless chicken thighs
plain yoghurt
toasted flaked almonds(optional)
pomegranate seeds(optional)

Our 30 minute recipe

  • 1.

Bring a lidded non-stick pot, 2/3 full of water, to the boil then add the rice. Let it simmer uncovered over a medium heat for just 7-8 mins, then drain and rinse under cold water and keep aside. Meanwhile, do Step 2.

  • 2.

Heat 2 tbsps of oil in a wide, non-stick pan over medium heat and when hot, add the onions and let them fry for 5-7 mins, stirring occasionally until golden brown. (It could be time to drain the rice now.) Remove a spoonful of fried onions from the pan to keep aside for garnish later on.

  • 3.

Add the chicken and the Garlic Paste to the onions and stir-fry for 3 mins. Add the Biryani Paste and fry for 2 more mins. Put 1 tbsp of chopped tomatoes into a small bowl and then tip the rest of them into the onion pan and fry for 2-3 more mins. Sprinkle in the Bombay Spice Mix and fry for 2 more mins. Then turn the heat right down and slowly add in half of the yoghurt and mix in and simmer for 2 mins.

  • 4.

Layer the Biryani: Rinse out your rice pot and then put half of the rice back into it. Ladle your chicken curry on top of the rice in the pot, then spoon the rest of the rice on top of the curry. Cover it with a lid and let it cook on the hob over a medium-low heat for 10-15 mins.

  • 5.

Meanwhile, add the juice of half a lemon and the rest of the yoghurt to your bowl of reserved tomatoes and mix well. This will be your cooling yoghurt raita to have alongside. When the rice is done and the chicken is fully cooked, serve the Biryani onto plates with your raita alongside. Sprinkle with the reserved fried onions, toasted flaked almonds and pomegranate seeds (if using).

My favourite

Kirsty - Nov 02, 2018

Wouldn’t bother with this again. Complete disappointment

Melissa - Nov 01, 2018

Too much liquid so ended up curry and rice slop. Tasted nice but think the recipe needs a rethink.

Natalie - Oct 31, 2018

I’ve never managed to cook a tasty biryani at home before - this was lovely

Tracy - Oct 31, 2018

Brilliant, had this twice now, lovely meal!

Annette - Oct 30, 2018

Easy to replicate too

Lynn - Oct 30, 2018

The ingredients list is not accurate. It specifies 200g yogurt yet only half need for recipe with rest for optional ingredients. Shopping list also includes a lemon yet no mention in recipe?

Lauren - Oct 30, 2018

One of my favourites! Loved it. Doubled the amount of chicken and rice and added spinach. Came out perfectly with a nice crusty bottom.

Tess - Oct 27, 2018

Great taste and easy to put together. I did mix all the yoghurt in instead of half but when cooked in the oven it made it slightly more saucy and took the edge off the heat a little. Boom!

Ben - Oct 25, 2018

It was nice but smelled stronger than it tasted

christina - Oct 23, 2018

Return dish. took for ever to cook this time. Don't know why

Suzanne - Oct 22, 2018

Julie - Oct 22, 2018

Easiest dish but tastes like I spent hours cooking!

Abi - Oct 21, 2018

Bit of a faff to cook but very tasty!

Ian - Oct 21, 2018

Amazing flavours, best yet. I just did it with normal rice, and didn't bother layering. Also, do turn it right down before adding the yoghurt as mine split, but didn't retract from the taste

Owen - Oct 19, 2018

Amazing recipe.

Natalie - Oct 16, 2018

Lovely quite spicy tho

Matthew - Oct 15, 2018

Rice too soft. Need an alternative method to keep the rice intact.

Jane - Oct 14, 2018

Great dish

Joanna - Oct 14, 2018

Excellent spice balance

Alison - Oct 13, 2018

One of the best dishes so far but more than enough for 2 people. Would easily feed 3, maybe 4! Fantastic flavours and very satisfying

Ian - Oct 13, 2018

Very good. We cooked in the oven as suggested in the tip and it worked well.

Vivien - Oct 13, 2018

Best yet

Emma - Oct 10, 2018

Absolutely amazing! Had this before but better this time after a few tweaks such as bake in oven plus made plenty of sauc. Total comfort food, a hug inside my belly ????

Nancy - Oct 07, 2018

Added mushrooms and green beans.

Gillian - Oct 07, 2018

Tasty but I used tinned tomatoes rather than fresh one so I would do again following the recipe. Everyone enjoyed it though.

Kirsty - Oct 07, 2018

Was lovely and I used the tip and baked it in the oven. Could have done putting a bit of sauce on the top instead of just the rice but still lovely!

Gaynor - Oct 07, 2018

Absolute Success!!

Joseph - Oct 06, 2018

Fabulous dish. Wasn't really looking forward to it, but stand corrected. Excellent.

Helen - Oct 04, 2018

Preferred it the next day cold. Tasty

Marie Thérèse - Oct 03, 2018

Enjoyed this better the next day although didn’t enjoy getting a mouthful of cardamom.

Gillian - Oct 03, 2018

Neil - Oct 03, 2018

Burnt on the bottom of my pan

Scott - Oct 01, 2018

Absolutely loved it! Easily one of my favourites

zoe - Sep 30, 2018

It's nice but has a lot of stages to it that's too much of a faff. There are other chicken dishes that are much tastier and more straight forward.

Alyson - Sep 30, 2018

I think I overcooked the rice as it all went a bit mushy but it tasted nice.

vanessa - Sep 29, 2018

Really nice, just like the one I love from a local award winning Indian Restaurant. Delicious

Andy - Sep 27, 2018

Joyce - Sep 26, 2018

Jamie - Sep 26, 2018

messed it up

Nicola - Sep 26, 2018

I enjoyed it but husband not fussed.
