Chicken Makhani4.5/5 (BASED ON 5653 reviews)
With roots in Punjab in Northern India, rumour has it that the famous Moti Mahal restaurant in Delhi designed this delicious curry. Also known as “butter chicken”, this dish is traditionally made by cooking the chicken in a hot oven (or tandoor) and then simmering it in the curry sauce which is then garnished with fenugreek leaves.

How Our Recipes Kits Work
We provide flavour ingredients:
- Butter Chicken Spices
- Makhani Curry Paste
- Fenugreek Leaves
Your shopping list:
- boneless chicken thighs
- plain yoghurt
- Basmati rice
- large onion
- double cream
- butter (from cupboard)
- a cucumber(optional)
Our 20 minute recipe
Heat the oven to 200C/fan 180C/ gas 6. Put the chicken pieces in a bowl with the Butter Chicken Spices and half of the yoghurt. Mix well and then arrange the pieces on a baking tray and cook in the oven for 15 mins, flipping them over halfway through.
Meanwhile, cook some rice according to packet instructions. Heat 1 tbsp of oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add the onions and and fry for 5-7 mins until they start to go golden.
Add the Makhani Curry Paste and mix well. Pour in the passata and stir it through. Bring it to a gentle boil and let it simmer until the chicken is done. While you’re waiting, you can prepare your cucumber and tomato salad now (if having).
Put all the chicken into the curry along with the Fenugreek Leaves and gently stir. Turn down the heat to low and add the butter and the cream. Stir well, letting the butter melt into the sauce and become glossy.
Serve the rice with the Chicken Makhani curry on top with the salad on the side (if having) and a spoonful of the remaining yoghurt.

one of the best curries, at the end, add a pack of washed spinach to the top and cover and let soften for 5 minutes, to give some extra veg and vitamins and colour, easy and looks beautiful, either mix in or serve on the side.

Delicious flavours and so easy
Dena - Nov 11, 2018
We liked this very much however, it was similar to a bought sauce from a jar. It’s good to know you made it yourself though and there are no nasty additives etc.

The worse dish I've had from simply cook. Might as well have wacked some Garam Masala in pasata as I couldn't taste much else but the tomato.
Lorraine - Nov 09, 2018
I loved this. Was a bit spicier than I expected and there wasn't as much sauce as in the picture but I'll still get it again. I put a bit extra butter in mine and loosened the sauce with a bit of water and extra passatta.

This was Delish! A very rich sauce with a lovely flavour. I wasn’t sure about it when it was cooking but it all comes together beautifully at the end. Getting this again!!!!

I thought chicken breasts (instead of thighs) would make the dish less fatty.
Michelle - Nov 07, 2018
Nice, but a bit too rich for us. Prob wouldn’t add so much butter next time
Gillian - Nov 07, 2018
Really enjoyed this meal. Will definitely have this again. Used single cream and added a slice of lemon just as it’s so creamy.

Needed to add milk to loosen this as it was rather thick
Caroline - Nov 05, 2018
I would make again but with chicken breast instead of thigh but that's just my personal preference
Stuart - Nov 05, 2018
Another fantastic dish.
Roderick - Nov 05, 2018
It was a lovely dish and we had zero leftover which is of course, good but taste wise it was almost on par with a supermarket microwave curry over the really rich Makhani you'd get at a proper Indian. I'd suggest the Saag curry over this.
Yvette - Nov 05, 2018
Unfortunately this dish fell short of the authentic taste.
Francesca - Nov 04, 2018
As lovely second time around even with a few adjustments this time, didn’t have cream so used coconut milk and added chickpeas to feed four of us.
Emma - Nov 04, 2018
Extremely mild if not bland. Disappointed as the rogan josh was amazing! Pimped mine up with some nigella seeds
