Pronounced "ba-boar-tee"this popular, traditional meal from Cape Town could vie for South Africa's National dish. This warming one-pot features spiced mince with sultanas with a golden custard-style topping. A fusion pie-style dish with Malay, Indian and Dutch influence, it can now be found all over Africa and has even been adapted in Argentina where the Bobotie mixture is placed in a hollowed out pumpkin or marrow and baked until tender!

Our 30 minute recipe

  • 1.

    Soak the bread

    Heat the oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6.

Mix the pieces of bread with 100ml of the milk in a shallow bowl and leave aside to soak.

  • 2.

    Fry the beef

Heat a little oil in a pan over medium-high heat and fry the onion for 3 mins.

Add the Cape Curry Paste and the beef mince and fry for 4 mins.

  • 3.

    Add the South African flavours

Mix in the Bobotie Blend, the Sosatie Sauce the sultanas and the soaked bread, and cook for 2 mins.

Transfer the mixture to an ovenproof dish. Flatten it down and slightly dry the surface by pressing some kitchen paper on top of the mince.

  • 4.

    Make the topping

Whisk the eggs with the other 160ml of milk. Season it and pour it over the Bobotie mixture. Bake it in the oven for 15 mins and then swap the setting to a medium-hot grill and cook for 3-4 more mins, or until the topping has set and is golden brown (make sure not to let it over-brown).

Meanwhile, boil a pan of salted water and cook the broccoli for 3 mins, then drain and keep aside.

If you're having rice on the side, cook this now according to pack instructions.

  • 5.

    Serve!

Serve a large spoonful of Bobotie with your sides and some mango chutney (if having).

Yummy.

tania - Nov 24, 2019

Tasty but could have been labelled any sort of curry. No real taste distinction from any other type of curry except for interesting ingredients.
