Beef Rendang topped the ‘World’s 50 best foods’ list in 2011. Traditionally it is rich, slightly dry curry dish prepared by Indonesians and Malaysians for weddings and other special occasions as it usually takes hours to cook leaving you with fall-apart chunks of beef. Our take on the Rendang is a quick version to save cooking time but to still bring you the classic aromatic ingredients of a Rendang with flavours of cardamom, turmeric, chilli and coconut! If you prefer chicken to the sirloin steaks in this dish you can absolutely make the swap.

We’ve sourced and blended all of the unique flavour ingredients to make our authentic Beef Rendang. We bring these all together in a recipe kit, which consists of 3 flavour pots; a Rendang Paste pot, a Rendang Garnish pot and a Garlic Paste pot. Simply follow our recipe, adding a few items from your fridge, to cook this delicious Beef Rendang in just 20 minutes.

Your shopping list for 2 servings:

  • 120g Basmati rice
  • 250g sirloin/rump steak
  • 1 small onion
  • 200ml coconut milk
  • 6 new potatoes (optional)
  • 100g green beans (optional)

Our 20 minute recipe

  1. Make some rice

    Cook the rice according to pack instructions.

    Boil the potatoes (if having) until almost tender, then add in the green beans (if having), for the last 3 mins. Then drain all the veg and keep aside. 

  2. Flash fry the beef

    Heat a little oil in a pan over medium-high heat then add the beef strips and let them cook quickly for 20 secs on each side to sear and lightly brown them. Then remove and keep aside.

  3. Create the curry

    In the same pan, fry the onion for 2 mins to soften, then add the GARLIC PASTE and cook for 2 mins.

    Stir in the RENDANG PASTE with a splash of water, and fry for 2 more mins.

    Pour in the coconut milk and let it simmer for 10 mins, adding 50ml water if it gets too dry.

  4. Finishing touches

    If you cooked some veg, add it to the curry now and cook for 1 min. 

    Return the beef (and juices) to the pan, then sprinkle in the RENDANG GARNISH and cook for 2 more mins.

  5. Serve!

    Serve the curry over rice.

Started to use beef but i tested it and found it tough luckily I had already cooked sweet potatoes with it so added them instead of the beef and served with coconut rice.

Absolutely love this one!!! I actually use beef chunks and do it in the slow cooker, in low for 5 hours, makes reading beef so much more tender than using steak.
