Beef Rendang4.1/5 (BASED ON reviews)
Beef Rendang topped the ‘World’s 50 best foods’ list in 2011. Traditionally it is rich, slightly dry curry dish prepared by Indonesians and Malaysians for weddings and other special occasions as it usually takes hours to cook leaving you with fall-apart chunks of beef. Our take on the Rendang is a quick version to save cooking time but to still bring you the classic aromatic ingredients of a Rendang with flavours of cardamom, turmeric, chilli and coconut! If you prefer chicken to the sirloin steaks in this dish you can absolutely make the swap.

Our 20 minute recipe
Make some rice
Cook the rice according to packet instructions.
Flash fry the beef
Heat a little oil in a wide pan over high heat then add the beef strips and flash-fry for a couple of seconds on each side just to sear and lightly brown them. Then remove and keep aside.
Create the curry
Fry the onion and potato in the same pan with the GARLIC PASTE for 3 mins over medium-high heat.
Stir in the RENDANG PASTE and fry for 2 more mins.
Pour in the coconut milk and let it simmer for 10 mins, or until the liquid reduces by about a third.
Add the beef (and juices) and the RENDANG GARNISH to the pan and cook for 2 more mins, or until the potatoes are tender.
Serve the curry over rice and garnish with coriander leaves and cashew nuts (if using)

Was happy with this one. Good flavour and nice texture. Cooked longest than suggested to allow the meat to be tender.

Spicy, but not quite as flavoursome as expected. Potatoes took a lot longer than the recipe.

Trudy - Dec 05, 2019
Has a kick!! Tasty though
Graeme - Dec 04, 2019
Lovely tasting dish. Make sure you boil away the liquid to ensure you get the dry curry the dish is meant to be
Karan - Dec 04, 2019
Lovely. Bit hotter than expected though
Sara - Dec 04, 2019
Should have used better quality steak.
Kelly - Dec 03, 2019

Sarah - Nov 28, 2019
Delicious really enjoyed this different tasty dish.
Steve - Nov 25, 2019
Creamy goodness, very filling!
Marisa - Nov 25, 2019
Nice taste but watery
Emma - Nov 24, 2019
Far too hot for me and very watery
Natalie - Nov 23, 2019
Cooked it with half the recommended coconut milk as it was so watery, slow cooked for a few hours and served with cauli rice, fresh red chilli and broccoli, nice but still watery. Dont know the recipe says to add a tin of coconut milk. A splash would've done it.
Tracy - Nov 22, 2019
Absolutely awful. ????
James - Nov 22, 2019
Fairly good taste
Rebekah - Nov 20, 2019
KATE - Nov 18, 2019
The sauce didn't reduce as it says so was a runny consistency and the steak a tad chewy at times.. nice flavour however ..like the potatoes in it
Andrew - Nov 17, 2019
Delicious- will definitely have this one again
Stephanie - Nov 17, 2019
We cook Rendang from scratch a lot, this rivalled my husband’s best version! Loved it.
Liz - Nov 16, 2019
I think rump would be better
Samantha - Nov 15, 2019
Read the reviews before making and didn't put all of the coconut milk in (maybe 3/4 of the tin). I also used green peppers and mushrooms rather than potato, was fantastic!
Brian - Nov 13, 2019
Penny - Nov 13, 2019
This was very good, regrettably a bit too hot for me as i have no tolerance for heat.
Andrea - Nov 11, 2019
When I reached the point of adding the coconut milk I brought to a simmer and popped into the slow cooker for the day while at work. It was the most tender beef rump and soft potatoes. Still a bit runny but delicious. Would definitely do again.
Catherine - Nov 10, 2019
Easy and delicious. Like other reviewers I found it looked nothing like the picture and not much like a rendang. But it was very tasty
Vanessa - Nov 07, 2019
Very nice indeed.
Leontia - Nov 07, 2019
Had this twice noe, Added a fresh chilli to it the second time, for a bit of a spicy dish
Clare - Nov 06, 2019
Ok but not as nice as the other recipes that we’ve had.
Michael - Nov 06, 2019
Not authentic, not even near.
Alexandra - Nov 04, 2019
Next level good!!
Lyndsey - Nov 04, 2019
Alison - Nov 04, 2019
Tasty but too much coconut milk it makes it sickly. I would use half the amount
Claire - Nov 04, 2019
Potatoes need extra cooking even when diced small. Probably best to part boil them before adding to the dish.
Paul - Nov 04, 2019
Didn't look anything like the picture as our coconut milk would reduce enough...
Hannah - Nov 02, 2019
Tasty but didn't look like the photo at all even though I followed the recipe to the letter
Annie - Nov 02, 2019
Surprising (and welcome) kick
Michael - Nov 02, 2019
Nothing to do with the beef Rendang I’ve had in many places. The picture on the card is SO different to what I got!
