Inspired by the warming spices of northern Africa, we’ve marinated fillet of cod with a flavourful rub featuring cassia, ginger and cayenne and oven-baked it until tender. It's served with new potatoes infused with our sweet roasted onion stock and cooked with cherry tomatoes, salty black olives and our signature Ras el Hanout spice blend. A really hearty but delicately spiced dish for the cooler evenings!

Our 20 minute recipe

  • 1.

Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Coat the pieces of cod in the Moroccan Rub and place them skin-side down on a lined baking sheet. Set aside.

  • 2.

Bring a pan of water to the boil and cook the potatoes for 8-10 mins, or until almost done. Meanwhile, see step 3.

  • 3.

Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a heavy-based lidded pan over a medium-high heat. Add the spring onions and stir-fry for 1 min, then add the Ras el Hanout, and fry for 1 more min. Pour in the tinned tomatoes, breaking up any large chunks with a spoon. Let it simmer for 5 mins while you put the fish in the oven to bake for 12 mins, (or until cooked to your liking).

  • 4.

Add the Roasted Onion Stock to the tomato pan and stir well. Add the potatoes and mix in so they become fully coated in the sauce. Cover the pan with a lid and continue to cook for 5-7 mins over a medium heat.

  • 5.

Add the olives to the pan and give it a final stir. Divide the potato mixture between 2 bowls and place the fish on top. Squeeze some lemon wedges (if using) over each dish and get stuck in!

Debbie - Sep 30, 2017

Really like it, did cook potatoes for few more mins but prob depends on what size you cut them

Alex - Sep 20, 2017

Very nice for a fish stew, we left this in the box for several months to be honest, as we were never in the mood for it but there was no need. It was lovely. No olives for us though.

Toni - Sep 06, 2017

Didn't like this one. Tasted very strong of all the seasoning ... wouldn't order again.

Tara - Aug 15, 2017

Too spicy. All I could taste was the spice.

Hannah - Aug 13, 2017

Flavours a bit overwhelming, have enjoyed other dishes a lot more

Cath - Aug 02, 2017

This would be nicer with couscous, we didn't love it with the potatoes.

Alaina - Jul 22, 2017

Too spicy

Annabel - Jul 22, 2017

Liked the fish but disappointed by the amount of potatoes for this dish. Not keen on that part of it.

Samantha - Jul 04, 2017

Too spicy for us

natasha - Jun 28, 2017

This really impressed friends! and me! I ended up cooking the potatoes longer, as I prefer soft veg, just on the border of the spice i can handle and very tasty!

Emma - Jun 23, 2017

Really tasty but just a bit bland. Potatoes needed cooking for longer.

Lesley - Jun 01, 2017

Very nice but a little too spicy for meo

Lesley - Jun 01, 2017

Very nice but a little too spicy for meo

Bev - May 09, 2017

Too spicy for me

Jillian - Apr 27, 2017

This is very spicy but a little yoghurt on the side cooled it down a little. Not one I think I will order again though.

Andrew - Apr 12, 2017

As others have noted, this is SPICY. But we loved the depth of taste the Ras El Hanout provided, and the overall dish is satisfyingly warming.

Melissa - Apr 03, 2017

I liked the potatoes but as others have said, it was too spicy for me to enjoy really.

Katie - Mar 24, 2017

Much spicier than any other dish we've had at this spice level. It really killed the balance of the dish.

Velika - Mar 23, 2017

just love any fish dishes <3

Amanda - Mar 07, 2017

We really enjoyed this dish, we used sea bream instead of cod. The spice mix for the fish went well with the sauce. There is a good amount of spiciness in the flavours but not over powering. Will definitely use again.

Alexia - Feb 20, 2017

Spice mix for the fish was absolutely delicious, very earthy and went well with the freshness of the sauce. Level of heat was perfect.

Nora - Feb 01, 2017

This one was the only dish I could not finish. It was WAY too spicy (much spicier than the 3-pepper rated dishes) and that overpowered everything. The potatoes didn't taste right in the sauce and just... I'm not sure how it could be improved but I doubt I will ever order this again.

Mary - Jan 30, 2017

The fish was lovely, but didn't like the tomato stew - the spices tasted too "harsh".

Helen - Jan 29, 2017

I enjoyed this recipe and will certainly have it again. Wasn't sure about the potatoes but I think it worked well.

Sandra - Jan 29, 2017

Just made this recipe. I Loved it. The spice level was expected after the heat rating given. Over baked the cod, but it still tasted good. Can't wait to eat my leftovers for dinner.

Ian - Nov 30, 2016

I like this dish but it is for too hot/peppery and kills all the other flavours ( had no basil so added two fist fulls of spinach, nice)

Stephen - Nov 11, 2016

Love spicy food, but this was just to hot.

Thomas - Oct 28, 2016

Absolutely delicious! This our 8th Simply Cook and the best we`ve had yet!!!

Jane - Oct 18, 2016

Really disappointed with this dish. Far too spicy, too many potatoes.

Caroline - Sep 26, 2016

Unfortunately far too spicy for me

Leah - Sep 21, 2016

Went to cook this last night only to find my rub pot had nothing in it. A dusting round the edges and nothing else! That said the flavours of the Ras el Hanout and the Roasted Onion Stock were enough to give it a really good flavour. I was really curious but unsure about this one but I loved it. It is hot as some people have said but personally I didn't find it to hot. My boyfriend was insanely jealous and said he wants to try it next time (he rejected it when i first showed him the card!). With the potatoes its deceptively filling so could even stretch to three. I think next time I'd halve the potatoes and add a few veggies. Absolutely delicious though.

Chris - Aug 03, 2016

Great flavours, perfect level of heat. Consistency came out nice just like the photo. The rub on the fish added great favour.

Sarah - Jul 29, 2016

This is the first dish I've not really enjoyed. I love Moroccan flavours so was really disappointed that the heat over powered this so much that it was unpleasant. If you amend the recipe to be a gentler heat I would try again. My husband who loves hot food really enjoyed this.

Didn't like this one as it was far too hot. I like moroccan flavours, but you couldn't taste much because of the spiciness. Disappointing :(

I love spicy food so found this lovely. Works well with nice meaty fish like cod or Hake.

Mel - Jul 15, 2016

Unfortunately the spices are really overpowering. It's the first dish I didn't like :(
